Mixed Media from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art

Mixed Media from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art presents a focused selection of works by first-generation Malaysian contemporary artists drawn from The AFK Collection. Spanning the 1990s to the mid-2010s, an era recognised as the Golden Period of Malaysian contemporary art, the exhibition examines a moment of significant artistic experimentation, when artists moved beyond the conventions of single mediums to adopt hybrid practices incorporating painting, printmaking, collage, assemblage and found materials. Working across these expanded material languages, artists rapidly responded to the social, cultural, political and economic transformations shaping Malaysia at the time, pushing the conceptual and formal boundaries of contemporary artmaking.
Building on the exhibitions To Know Malaysia is To Love Malaysia: Highlights from The AFK Collection (Cultural Foundation Abu Dhabi, April–September 2025) and Paintings from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art (The Drawing Room at Yap Ah Shak House, August 2025), this presentation foregrounds mixed media as a key mode of artistic inquiry during the Golden Period.
By bringing these works together, the exhibition highlights how experimentation with materials and interdisciplinary approaches became central to the emergence of Malaysian contemporary art.
The Mixed Media from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art is a free walk-in exhibition that does not require prior booking or registration.
