Free

Step into the vibrant world of Ronggeng Kuala Lumpur — a once-iconic social dance and music tradition that shaped the cultural life of Downtown KL from the early 20th century to the 1960s. Curated by Nusantara Performing Arts Research Center (NusPARC), this exhibition explores the revival of Ronggeng as a living, multicultural heritage practice in contemporary Kuala Lumpur.

Exhibition Themes

1. Origins & Social Life Discover how Ronggeng emerged as a popular social dance and music culture in Kuala Lumpur, bringing together diverse communities across the city’s nightlife districts.

2. Multicultural Exchange Explore Ronggeng as a shared cultural space shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian and other communities, reflecting the layered histories of urban Kuala Lumpur.

3. Revival & Continuity Learn about NusPARC’s revival initiative since 2019, reconnecting senior practitioners with younger generations and reactivating Ronggeng within today’s city spaces.

Through archival materials, photographs, documentation and storytelling, this exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Ronggeng not only as a performance form but as a living social experience rooted in Kuala Lumpur’s collective memory.
