SUMMARY:Maybank Art Collection Exhibition (MACE)
DESCRIPTION:The Maybank Art Collection Exhibition (MACE) marks the first time Maybank is presenting selected artworks from its collection to the public. \nOver several decades\, Maybank has built an art collection through works that were acquired and gifted to the Bank. Many of these artworks have long been part of Maybank’s offices and public spaces\, encountered in everyday settings rather than in a gallery context. MACE brings these works together in a curated exhibition\, allowing them to be viewed\, experienced\, and engaged with more intentionally. \nThe exhibition reflects Maybank’s role as a custodian of these artworks. In opening the collection to the public\, MACE aims to make the works more accessible while respecting the artists\, the integrity of the artworks\, and the broader cultural landscape they belong to. \nVisitor Information\nExhibition Period: 11 February to 22 May 2026 \nGallery Hours: Monday to Friday | 10.00am – 5.00pm (Closed on public holidays) \nVenue: Balai Seni Maybank\, Menara Maybank\, Kuala Lumpur \nAdmission: Free entry

SUMMARY:Whispering Pixels
DESCRIPTION:Downtown Kuala Lumpur has always been full of memories. Over the years\, and especially after the pandemic\, many familiar places such as traditional kopitiams and family-run shops have changed or disappeared\, while some have managed to endure. For those who grew up here\, these changes are not just physical; they also represent the gradual loss of personal and shared memories. \nWhispering Pixels is a physical exhibition and a digital archive that helps preserve these memories using digital technology\, allowing them to be experienced by a wider community. As many of these stories are not found in conventional museums\, the project documents meaningful personal objects and the stories behind them\, creating a living digital archive of shared memories. \nA special feature of the project is its co-creation process\, where seniors work together with artists and younger generations to document their own stories. They select meaningful objects and participate in activities such as digital photography\, scrapbooking\, and 3D scanning. This collaboration empowers seniors as co-creators of their own histories while fostering meaningful intergenerational connections. \nWhispering Pixels invites everyone to reflect on the changes around them and appreciate the memories embedded in everyday objects. \nThis is a free walk-in programme that does not require prior bookings or registration. Simply come to the GMBB and enjoy!

SUMMARY:A Path Carved by My Returning - Art Exhibition by Ilham Alshahab
DESCRIPTION:In A Path Carved By My Returning\, Ilham Alshahab invites viewers to slow down and reconsider the act of looking\, how repeated encounters with the familiar and mundane can shift in perception\, allowing what was once passed by to come into view through time and attention. \nDrawing from her experience of returning and repeating her cycling route in her neighbourhood\, the work traces her shift from restlessness to attention. Small moments that once lingered in the edges of her vision begin to take precedence\, moving from the periphery to the centre. \nA path is slowly carved through the accumulation of her visits to the periphery. Where looking again and again allows the ordinary to unfold into something expansive. \nThis body of work will be on display at The Dia Space from 1 May 2026 till 31 July 2026.

SUMMARY:Under the Shadows of Merdeka Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Malaysia gained its independence in 1957. Fast forward 67 years and Menara Merdeka 118\, the second tallest building in the world\, stands proudly in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. \nNeedless to say\, progress and change in the capital have been rapid. The cityscape is filled with modern infrastructure and skyscrapers\, yet historical\, traditional and cultural characteristics persevere. \n‘Under the Shadows of Merdeka’ is a visual documentation of the precincts surrounding Menara Merdeka 118. In the heart of Kuala Lumpur\, people\, places and moments are captured in black & white by photographers Azul Adnan and Grace Ho Pui Wan. These photos set out to preserve both the old and the new\, showing how the city has developed since Malaysia’s independence. \nThis project was under the Merdeka 118 Community Grants Programme Cycle 2 by Think City and PNB Merdeka Ventures. It involved Azul and Grace photographing the areas around Merdeka 118\, conducting photography workshops for schools\, exhibiting the images and publishing a photo book in December 2024. \nThis exhibition\, held at the South Lobby of Menara Merdeka 118\, will be the third time some of these photos are displayed to the public\, the first being inside Stadium Merdeka (2024) and the second being at GMBB (2025). There will be some newer images that will be exhibited for the first time.

SUMMARY:Pola TAR - Mapping Patterns
DESCRIPTION:PolaTAR is a site-specific arts and fashion programme that reimagines Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR) as a living cultural ecosystem within Kuala Lumpur’s creative economy. \nDrawing inspiration from everyday fashion labour — measuring\, stitching\, repairing\, selling\, wearing — PolaTAR celebrates fashion not limited to style\, but as living memory. Through two key pillars\, the programme connects people\, place and practice. \nThe first part\, Mapping Patterns\, is a collaborative project linking fashion students with local garment makers along Jalan TAR. Each student partners with a practitioner to document their craft and stories. These encounters are transformed into site-specific installations across the neighbourhood.

SUMMARY:Mixed Media from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Mixed Media from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art presents a focused selection of works by first-generation Malaysian contemporary artists drawn from The AFK Collection. Spanning the 1990s to the mid-2010s\, an era recognised as the Golden Period of Malaysian contemporary art\, the exhibition examines a moment of significant artistic experimentation\, when artists moved beyond the conventions of single mediums to adopt hybrid practices incorporating painting\, printmaking\, collage\, assemblage and found materials. Working across these expanded material languages\, artists rapidly responded to the social\, cultural\, political and economic transformations shaping Malaysia at the time\, pushing the conceptual and formal boundaries of contemporary artmaking. \nBuilding on the exhibitions To Know Malaysia is To Love Malaysia: Highlights from The AFK Collection (Cultural Foundation Abu Dhabi\, April–September 2025) and Paintings from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art (The Drawing Room at Yap Ah Shak House\, August 2025)\, this presentation foregrounds mixed media as a key mode of artistic inquiry during the Golden Period. \nBy bringing these works together\, the exhibition highlights how experimentation with materials and interdisciplinary approaches became central to the emergence of Malaysian contemporary art. \nThe Mixed Media from the Golden Period of Malaysian Contemporary Art is a free walk-in exhibition that does not require prior booking or registration.

SUMMARY:Philippe Gaulier: The Man Who Waits for Freedom
DESCRIPTION:On 9 February 2026\, legendary French theatre master and pedagogue Philippe Gaulier passed away in Paris at the age of 82 due to complications from a lung infection. \nOver the past decades\, his singular approach to teaching profoundly influenced actors\, directors\, and creators around the world. His philosophy of Le Jeu (“Play”) not only transformed acting methods\, but fundamentally reshaped the way performance itself is understood. \nPhilippe Gaulier is widely regarded as one of the most influential and revolutionary theatre teachers of our time. His school\, École Philippe Gaulier\, has long attracted students from more than thirty countries and regions worldwide\, becoming a pilgrimage site for theatre practitioners across the globe. \nHis former students span international film and theatre industries\, including Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson\, Sacha Baron Cohen\, Geoffrey Rush\, Helena Bonham Carter\, Kathryn Hunter\, Anthony Wong\, Karena Lam\, Jim Chim\, Vera Chen\, and many others. \nThe title was personally given by Philippe Gaulier himself\, and the film ultimately became one of his final gifts to the world. \nDirected by Christiaan Hendriksen and Samuel Tressler IV\, the documentary follows Gaulier over an extended period through intimate observation and in-depth conversations. \nBeginning with his 80th birthday celebration\, the film captures students from around the world gathering to honour the teacher who transformed their lives\, while also witnessing his final moments of teaching before retirement. \nThe documentary not only reveals his highly distinctive teaching methods\, but also captures his humour\, sharpness\, honesty\, and uncompromising spirit. \nFeatured interviewees include: \n• Anthony Wong • Linda Kerr Scott • Luke Rollason • Cal McCrystal • Viggo Venn and others. \n🗣️ Languages: English\, French & German\n📝 Subtitles: Chinese\, English & Bahasa Melayu \n【Screening Information】 \n📅 23 May 2026 (Saturday)\n📅 30 May 2026 (Saturday)\n📅 6 June 2026 (Saturday) \n🕒 3:00 PM \n📍 GSC @ LaLaport \nTicket price: RM15 \nThis special screening is officially authorised by École Philippe Gaulier\, with the generous support of \n• Chinese Film Association of Malaysia \n• Happy Together Pictures \n• ACT 2 PICTURES

SUMMARY:My life is a symphony. I thought I was the solo conductor.
DESCRIPTION:As part of KL Festival\, the outdoor drumming performance will be a series of songs for readaptation of Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s work since 2019 (from the concert LaguKu 2.0 to their album 浪[Lang] x Lepak published in 2021). \nMaintaining percussion as the main ingredient and incorporating different elements\, these pieces turn the observations and attitudes in life into a feast for the ears and eyes. They capture the hidden loneliness in the chaos of the prosperous city\, releasing it in a cacophony of rawness. Armed with more creativity and energy\, Orang Orang blends the everyday life of the grassroots of the society into the framework of the symphony\, sometimes keeping in step\, sometimes completely throwing all structure out of the window\, as is life in this city. \nFrom the background of 24 Festive Drums — an art form created with the image of “Malaysian-Chinese” identity and later embraced as part of Malaysia’s cultural heritage — the drummers began experimenting within this context\, developing performances that evolved into drum theatre. Drum theatre finds its relation between music and man\, set in the background of the city. Sometimes composing music for the characters\, sometimes finding characters for the composed music. \nNo bookings needed\, see you there!

SUMMARY:Realm of Rhythm
\nRealm of Rhythm is more than a concert; it is the creative culmination of Malaysian percussionist Thong Yoong How’s lifelong dedication to the 24 Festive Drums. By weaving together the fluid lines of calligraphy\, the disciplined energy of martial arts\, and the grace of dance\, Thong transforms drumming into a spatial and poetic language that transcends mere rhythm. \nThis showcase features works refined over a decade of competition and composition. The performance brings together talented drummers aged 15 to 25 from the Seremban Chung Hua High School and Sunway University 24 Festive Drums teams. These young performers are both students and inheritors\, breathing new life into a traditional legacy. \nOn stage\, every strike is a breath and every rhythm a moving landscape. As the echoes fill the air\, the audience is invited to step into a world where power meets stillness and tradition greets the contemporary. \nThis is the artistic dimension born of the drum. This is Realm of Rhythm.

SUMMARY:Fragments of Tuah - Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Fragments of Tuah is a documentary theatre work set to original songs and music\, that revisits\, dissects and reimagines the enduring figure of Hang Tuah – the 15th-century warrior whose myth and memory continue to echo across time in modern Malaysia. \nHaving toured as one of the opening performances for Kyoto Experiment 2025\, the one man play researched by Mark Teh\, Faiq Syazwan Kuhiri\, Syamsul Azhar and Wong Tay Sy\, looks at the different facets and phases of the legendary 15th-century figure via a layered collage of perspectives and materials-drawn from archival texts\, schoolbooks\, songs\, state slogans\, memories and history. \nThis second staging in KL once again invites the audience into a space of reflection where the fragments of Tuah are pieced together not to restore a whole\, but to explore the gaps\, contradictions and questions that linger. Joining this staging are multimedia designer Bryan Chang\, musicians/performers OJ Law and Shariman Shuhaime\, and stage manager Shazzy Zakri. The Fragments of Tuah project was originally produced by June Tan and Hoe Hui Ting.

SUMMARY:Siapa Cacat? - Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Siapa Cacat? is a Disabled-led theatre production co-directed by Ho Lee Ching and Jazzie Lee Jin Jye\, featuring seven Disabled performers: Ameera Ramlee\, Dino N. Hassan\, Fndrocka Notapurba\, Gejaletchumi Murugaya\, Lavinia A.\, Nuna Wan and Nur Aisyah Shahimee\, and interpreter Aw Wei Chun. \nSet at a bus stop\, the performance unfolds as different figures come and go\, each waiting for the newly promised accessible Bus 801 to arrive and allow them to continue with their day. Through a series of scenes and monologues\, the performers share moments of playful defiance\, escapism and reflection on agency\, time and belonging. \nAt its heart\, Siapa Cacat? seeks to reclaim the word “cacat”. Often used as a slur\, the production offers a powerful statement of empowerment and a provocation to reconsider who belongs on stage. It reframes disability as culture\, aesthetics and creativity\, while commenting on the stigma faced by the disabled community in Malaysia.

SUMMARY:Origin of a Tale
DESCRIPTION:Between dance and storytelling\, and all while manipulating sounds and clay\, the actor-sculptors will tell a story of the fables\, and take you on a journey through time and space. It is as if they are going back in time\, digging into the origins of the first stories\, perhaps even before words\, borders\, rules and obstacles existed. \nAs the stories bring us together\, the actors make and create shapes: a donkey\, a turtle\, a cow\, a tree “that thought it was stronger than all”\, a frog\, an elephant\, a man in a canoe. \nAnd what if the first fable was born of clay? Artists Aurélien Zouki and Eric Deniaud knead and continue to create\, inviting us to travel with them through time and space\, on a poetic expedition into the strata of speech.
