SUMMARY:Shakespeare Demystified: THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare Demystified: The Merchant of Venice marks KL Shakespeare Players’ first major production of 2026\, presented as part of the company’s 15th year of touring and theatre-making. \nThis 100-minute abridged production presents Shakespeare’s text through carefully selected key scenes\, supported by clear narrative transitions in contemporary English. Students do not need prior knowledge of the play. By the end of the performance\, they will have a strong grasp of the story\, characters\, conflicts\, and central themes—an approach that has consistently been praised by teachers as both engaging and pedagogically effective. \nOur production highlights the tension between justice and mercy–between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. Between revenge and forgiveness. It also explores how unkindness begets unkindness and how friendship engenders love. All this is set against a backdrop of appearance versus reality. Of course\, as in most Shakespeare plays\, family\, home\, and belonging sit at the heart of the work. \nWhen The Merchant of Venice was last staged by KLSP in 2016\, it was performed 38 times for schools and public audiences across Langkawi\, Penang\, Seremban\, and Johor Bahru. The production brought Shakespeare’s tragiccomedy vividly to life\, resonating with audiences through its humour\, emotional depth\, and enduring questions of justice\, mercy\, and humanity. \nSYNOPSIS\nBassanio hopes to win the hand of Portia\, a rich and intelligent woman\, but he needs money to do so. He turns to his close friend Antonio\, the Merchant of Venice\, for help. Out of friendship\, Antonio borrows three thousand ducats from Shylock\, a moneylender. When Antonio cannot repay the loan by the agreed date\, Shylock insists on the bond’s terrifying price: a pound of Antonio’s flesh…

SUMMARY:Emily of Emerald Hill
DESCRIPTION:Emily of Emerald Hill (Synopsis) \nACT 1\nIt is 1950. Emily\, the matriarch of Emerald Hill\, introduces her household members and recalls her childhood days. She recounts her early marriage to a man twice her age and her battles with some of her in-laws to gain the favour of her mother and father –in- law. \nShe succeeds. She has three sons and a daughter. She makes use of her eldest son especially to gain the upper hand in the struggle for power in the family. The eldest son is sent to England to study law but he becomes a horse trainer. Upon Emily’s demands that he returns to complete his studies in Singapore\, he commits suicide. \nACT 2\nAfter a whirlwind of marketing and preparation for the new year\, Emily continues her narration of her early exploits as a mother and especially her quarrel with her husband who has gone to stay in his mistress’ house. She plots his return and finally he dies in hospital without saying anything to her. On examining the part she played in the death of her son and her husband\, she begins to understand herself and leads a new life\, letting go of her other children and living in the old house all by herself to a ripe old age. \nFinis \nA Brief History of the Play\nEmily of Emerald Hill had its World Premiere in humble surroundings\, the Guthrie Chemara Club House\, Seremban on 17th November 1984. The producer was Liau Siau Suan\, the director Chin San Sooi and Leow Puay Tin helmed the title role. She performed it 21 times. \nSince then\, it has gone on to create Malaysian and Singaporean theatre history by being the most performed play in full\, abridged\, added or without the playwright’s permission. Also\, the play has been introduced as a text in the school curricula and university Theatre and English Language faculties. \nActresses who have played Emily are Leow Puay Tin (Dir. Chin San Sooi)\, Margaret Chan (Dir. Max Le Blond) Pearlly Chua (Dir. Chin San Sooi)\, Jalyn Han Practice (in Mandarin (Dir. Ng Sin Yue)\, Aileen Lau Guek Lin (Dir. Louise Henriette Fernandez)\, Neo Swee Lin (Dir. Lim Kay Siu) and actor Ivan Heng ( Dir.Krishen Jit). One production went to Hawaii\, another to Scotland and another to Hong Kong and Melbourne\, Pearlly to Vancouver\, Wollongon\, Sydney\, Adelaide\, Guanzhou\, Singapore and throughout the major cities of Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur\, Penang\, Ipoh\, Seremban\, Malacca\, Johore Baru Kuching\, Sibu and Miri.) \nPearlly has played Emily more times than anyone else. Up- to- date she has performed the role 241 times; and her performance has gained cult status. During the Bersih rally\, the audience came to see the play inspite of the barricade. \nToday it is a benchmark to any actress who wants to take to the stage

SUMMARY:Ballet Illuminations 2026
DESCRIPTION:Singapore Ballet returns to klpac with Ballet Illuminations\, opening the evening with the all-time favourite Paquita\, a sparkling showcase of classical virtuosity. The programme then moves into neoclassical territory\, reflecting the company’s tradition of presenting both classical and contemporary works—previous editions have featured audience favourites such as Cinderella Act 2\, Piano Concerto No. 2\, Op. 102\, and neo-classical gems by Choo-San Goh. \nThis year’s performance expands with two compelling additions from the company’s repertoire: Shadow’s Edge by Ma Cong — highlighting his bold\, contemporary choreographic voice. Evening Voices by Tim Rushton — an atmospheric\, sculptural work blending classical lines with modern expression. \nTogether\, these works deliver a dynamic evening that journeys from classical brilliance to contemporary nuance\, offering Malaysian audiences a concentrated taste of Singapore Ballet’s artistic range. \nBallet Illuminations 2026 is presented by Singapore Ballet and The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre\, supported by YTL Corporation Berhad and the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

SUMMARY:當然，沒關係 It's OK
\nIt’s OK is a playful yet honest romantic comedy about flirtation and the courage to try again. Set inside a real café\, the performance removes the traditional stage distance — the audience and performers share the same space\, the same air\, the same awkward pauses. \nMore than just a show\, it is a truly intimate\, up-close theatre experience — where every glance\, every hesitation feels real and immediate. When a simple greeting turns into an attempt at connection\, hesitation and humor unfold. Sometimes we say “It’s OK” not because it doesn’t matter — but because we still hope it might. \nOnly 30 seats per show. Once it’s full\, it’s gone.

SUMMARY:Islands 人之島 (Southeast Asian Premiere)
DESCRIPTION:Earmarked by Dance Magazine Japan as someone “definitely worth anticipating”\, former Cloud Gate 2 dancer and a Bloom Prize finalist of The Rose International Dance Prize 2025\, Wang Yeu-kwn\, is fast gaining international attention. This certified fisherman is also the first Taiwanese to receive three awards at Japan’s Yokohama Dance Collection. \nWang’s Islands\, the second episode of “A Trilogy — Quest of Relationships”\, began in 2019 as part of the Cloud Gate Wanderers Project. On a quest to unearth his own story and identity\, Wang set sail for Indonesia where he reconnected with dancer Danang Pamungkas. From lone wanderers to kindred companions\, they explored the weight of bodies anchored to land and air\, where identity\, like the shifting shores\, ebbs and flows with the tides. \nThe result is a dance performance that captures the tenderness of the earth and our bond with it. Through graceful movement\, use of the topeng (Indonesian mask) and intimate storytelling\, Wang invites one to reflect on the ties between humans and the islands we call home. \nThis May\, Wang’s Islands will make its Southeast Asian premiere at klpac (Malaysia) followed by a tour to Salihara Arts Centre (Indonesia) after. It marks the fourth consecutive collaboration between the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Malaysia and klpac\, with the support of the Ministry of Culture\, Taiwan. \nIslands was co-commissioned by the National Theater & Concert Hall\, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying)\, with residency support by Kinosaki International Arts Center and The Place\, as well as production support by FACP – Clare C. & Friends Fellowship. \nFollowing its 2024 premiere at the National Theater & Concert Hall in Taipei\, Islands was staged at The Place in London\, and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) in Taiwan.

SUMMARY:Pola TAR - Mapping Patterns
DESCRIPTION:PolaTAR is a site-specific arts and fashion programme that reimagines Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR) as a living cultural ecosystem within Kuala Lumpur’s creative economy. \nDrawing inspiration from everyday fashion labour — measuring\, stitching\, repairing\, selling\, wearing — PolaTAR celebrates fashion not limited to style\, but as living memory. Through two key pillars\, the programme connects people\, place and practice. \nThe first part\, Mapping Patterns\, is a collaborative project linking fashion students with local garment makers along Jalan TAR. Each student partners with a practitioner to document their craft and stories. These encounters are transformed into site-specific installations across the neighbourhood.

SUMMARY:MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
DESCRIPTION:“Don’t lose your A-PEEL!” \nTwisting Shakespeare with polo\, parties\, pranks and pickles-a-plenty in 1930s Penang. \nA very special production for KLSP as this show features a cast of 17 actors\, including both veterans and newbies – all of whom have received our training in performing Shakespeare. \nAlthough this show only use Shakespeare’s text (there will be subtitles in BM and Chinese)\, it is presented within the flamboyant setting of a polo club in 1930s Penang. Here\, Leonato is a Chinese tycoon\, entertaining royalty at his palatial home\, where he is thrilled to discover that the champion polo player wants to marry his daughter. As the partying continues into the weekend\, tricks are played and misunderstandings ensue\, turning laughter into tears until the security guards uncover a dastardly plot\, and finally a happier wedding (or two) can take place. \n“Much Ado About Nothing” can appear to simply be an hilarious tale of pranks and romance\, but it also presents the struggles of a family dealing with the shame of their daughter being falsely accused. The Malaysian setting of our production helps to highlight the relevance of this story for Asian families\, while its placement in the 1930s creates some reflective distance to these issues. \nHighlights:\n– 17 actors\n– Shakespeare’s text only but with BM/Chinese subtitles\n– set in 1930’s polo club in Penang\n– many scenes of hilarious physical comedy\n– includes music and dancing\n– mix of live action and projected film\n– presents issues relevant to young people – friendship vs romance\, misunderstand and …

In Malaysia and across South-East Asia\, the marketplace is a dynamic space where cultures\, trade and communities intersect – an ever-flowing confluence that can be traced back to Pasar Seni at the birth of Kuala Lumpur. In the same spirit\, Warung TERANG will activate buildings as sites of exchange\, using projection mapping to reflect an intellectual exchange of narratives that inspires viewers to imagine and innovate further. SUMMARY:Pending
DESCRIPTION:Following January Low as a solo performer whose role has evolved from dancer to mother\, this work asks what it means to be a contemporary female practitioner of Indian classical dance today. It challenges both Low’s and the audience’s perceptions of the Indian classical dancer by foregrounding the unseen physical discipline required to sustain an art form without the certainty of the stage. Pending also examines how Odissi adapts in the digital age\, where learning is slowed\, guidance is virtual\, and feedback unfolds over weeks rather than moments. \nAbout the artist:\nJanuary Low is a Malaysian mid-career dance artist who specialises in Odissi and has been practising for close to 30 years. She spent her formative training in Sutra Dance Theatre and toured extensively with the company for over a decade. Her departure from Sutra in 2009 initiated a process of deep self-inquiry affecting how she chooses to share Odissi with her audience today. \nOver the years Low has been gently observing the rhythm between dance and life and how Odissi continues to exist in her daily South-East Asian female body. As a mother of three\, she continues to challenge themes of agency\, objectification and commodification of the Indian Classical Dancer.

\nOi-Jia is a solo performance that begins with the experience of becoming a mother. \nAs fear and anxiety surface in the midst of childcare\, a woman turns to examine her own mother\, and extends her gaze further to her late grandmother. The family narratives in which she has long believed begin to loosen under scrutiny and questioning – what once seemed like a clear chain of responsibility gradually dissolves\, revealing choices and temperaments that cannot be fully attributed to any single generation. \nThis is neither a letter of accusation to the previous generation nor a ritual of reconciliation. \nRather\, Oi-Jia unfolds as a suspended moment – when we can no longer hand our pain entirely to those before us\, are we still willing to take responsibility for who we are in the present? \nWith a minimalist stage and the symbolic presence of a spittoon as its central object\, the work allows the audience to witness how narrative collapses and reassembles within a single individual. This is not a display of interpersonal conflict\, but a quiet meditation on memory\, responsibility and becoming. \nCredits: \nDirector/Playwright: Wong Lay Chin \nDevised with and Performed by: MayJune
