SUMMARY:Odes To Heroes 英歌 by Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The dance drama Odes To Heroes centers around the Yingge Dance\, renowned as the “Chinese Martial Dance”. Through the fantasy time-space journey of the young man Chen Xinyuan\, it recreates the struggle history and the great sense of family and country of the ancestors in the Chaoshan hometown of overseas Chinese when they “headed to Southeast Asia”. The drama skillfully integrates Lingnan folk elements such as Qiaopi (overseas Chinese remittance letters)\, Chaoshan Opera\, woodcarving\, and hand-made beef balls. Coupled with creative dance choreography and stunning audio-visual effects\, it perfectly combines the profundity of traditional culture with innovative stage technology. It is regarded by the audience as a cultural masterpiece that “awakens the bloodline”. It has won the funded project of the National Art Fund in 2025 and the 2025 Cross-border Communication Award at the Weibo Revitalizing Intangible Cultural Heritage Ceremony\, among others. \n舞剧《英歌》以被誉为“中华战舞”的英歌舞为核心，通过青年陈心远的奇幻时空之旅，再现了潮汕侨乡先辈“下南洋”的奋斗史与家国大义。剧中巧妙融入了侨批、潮剧、木雕、手打牛肉丸等岭南民俗元素，配合创意舞蹈编排与震撼的视听效果，将传统文化的深沉与创新的舞台科技完美结合，被观众称为“血脉觉醒”的文化佳作。获2025年国家艺术基金资助项目及微博焕新非遗盛典2025年度跨界传播奖等。

Yet\, rather than merely placing traditions side by side\, it seeks to discover the creative connections between them — revealing how difference can become a source of dialogue\, understanding and shared joy. \nMore than a dance production\, GENGGAMAN aspires to be a cultural statement for our times. It affirms that Malaysia’s greatest strength does not lie in the uniformity of its cultures\, but in the harmonious coexistence of traditions that remain deeply rooted while continuing to evolve. \nThrough dance\, music and artistic collaboration\, the production celebrates universal values of respect\, unity and the joy of living together. It also reminds us that the true measure of a society is not simply its material progress\, but how deeply it values its arts\, nurtures its cultural heritage and creates opportunities for people to imagine\, create and flourish together. \nEach participating company brings its own distinctive artistic voice. DiDance\, under Zaridah Mallik\, brings a fresh contemporary energy to Malay traditional and popular dance\, challenging convention while remaining grounded in its cultural roots. Dua Space Dance Theatre\, led by Anthony Meh and Aman Yap\, has developed a distinctive Malaysian contemporary vocabulary drawing from Chinese ethnic dance forms\, Malaysian landscapes\, music and lived experience. They are the pure heart of the wild\, untouched by ambition or excess. But their sanctuary is threatened when the outside world arrives\, driven by an insatiable hunger for more: more plastic\, more concrete\, more cities\, more consumption. The humans do not see the forest. They see only land to be stripped and built upon. \nAs the destroyers march forward\, the forest begins to cry out. And from the deepest grove\, the Wind awakens—the ancient mother of the forest\, keeper of its memory and fury. She rises not with mercy\, but with the full force of nature’s wrath\, determined to halt the destruction before it is too late. \nYet in the chaos of battle\, a deeper question lingers: the forest has outlasted empires.
