DESCRIPTION:Following January Low as a solo performer whose role has evolved from dancer to mother\, this work asks what it means to be a contemporary female practitioner of Indian classical dance today. It challenges both Low’s and the audience’s perceptions of the Indian classical dancer by foregrounding the unseen physical discipline required to sustain an art form without the certainty of the stage. Pending also examines how Odissi adapts in the digital age\, where learning is slowed\, guidance is virtual\, and feedback unfolds over weeks rather than moments. \nAbout the artist:\nJanuary Low is a Malaysian mid-career dance artist who specialises in Odissi and has been practising for close to 30 years. She spent her formative training in Sutra Dance Theatre and toured extensively with the company for over a decade. Her departure from Sutra in 2009 initiated a process of deep self-inquiry affecting how she chooses to share Odissi with her audience today. \nOver the years Low has been gently observing the rhythm between dance and life and how Odissi continues to exist in her daily South-East Asian female body. As a mother of three\, she continues to challenge themes of agency\, objectification and commodification of the Indian Classical Dancer.

DESCRIPTION:《娭毑》是一齣從「成為母親」開始的單人劇。 \n當育兒的恐懼與不安浮現，一名女性回頭凝視自己的母親，並將視線延伸至已經過世的外婆。那些她長久以來深信不疑的家族敘事，在求證與追問中逐漸鬆動。原本清楚的責任鏈開始崩解，留下的是無法完全歸責於任何一代人的選擇與性格交錯。 \n這不是一封對上一代的控訴信，也不是一場和解儀式。《娭毑》更像是一個暫停的瞬間。當我們無法再把痛苦完全交給上一代時，我們是否仍然願意為現在的自己負責？ \n作品以極簡舞台與象徵性物件「痰桶」為核心，讓觀眾看見敘事如何在一個人心中崩解又重組。這不是角色衝突的展示，而是一場對記憶、責任與成為的凝視。 \nOi-Jia is a solo performance that begins with the experience of becoming a mother. \nAs fear and anxiety surface in the midst of childcare\, a woman turns to examine her own mother\, and extends her gaze further to her late grandmother. The family narratives in which she has long believed begin to loosen under scrutiny and questioning – what once seemed like a clear chain of responsibility gradually dissolves\, revealing choices and temperaments that cannot be fully attributed to any single generation. \nThis is neither a letter of accusation to the previous generation nor a ritual of reconciliation. \nRather\, Oi-Jia unfolds as a suspended moment – when we can no longer hand our pain entirely to those before us\, are we still willing to take responsibility for who we are in the present? \nWith a minimalist stage and the symbolic presence of a spittoon as its central object\, the work allows the audience to witness how narrative collapses and reassembles within a single individual. DESCRIPTION:Presented in Kuala Lumpur\, then Jakarta\, and recently Ipoh\, Tapir Studio’s ‘Tidur Lambak’ now returns back home to the heart of Kuala Lumpur. \n‘Tidur Lambak: Kampung Dalam Kota’ is an immersive rest-based experience that reimagines the nostalgic communal sleeping arrangement associated with the Malaysian practice of ‘balik kampung’ or homecoming. Set in Lake Gardens\, filled with tikars and tilam toto\, an urban park transforms into a temporary “kampung” room – a place to wander\, settle\, lie down and rest. \nThis is an intersection of installation\, projection\, soundscape\, and storytelling. Participants enter a carefully composed sonic and visual environment where intimate dream confessions from Kuala Lumpur blend with meditative\, healing frequencies. The work unfolds in two acts: (1) communal unwinding and (2) individual slumber. Together\, these phases dissolve the boundary between stranger and kin\, forming a rare moment of collective stillness. \n*Audiences are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and bring their own pillow.

DESCRIPTION:As part of KL Festival\, the outdoor drumming performance will be a series of songs for readaptation of Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s work since 2019 (from the concert LaguKu 2.0 to their album 浪[Lang] x Lepak published in 2021). \nMaintaining percussion as the main ingredient and incorporating different elements\, these pieces turn the observations and attitudes in life into a feast for the ears and eyes. They capture the hidden loneliness in the chaos of the prosperous city\, releasing it in a cacophony of rawness. Armed with more creativity and energy\, Orang Orang blends the everyday life of the grassroots of the society into the framework of the symphony\, sometimes keeping in step\, sometimes completely throwing all structure out of the window\, as is life in this city. \nFrom the background of 24 Festive Drums — an art form created with the image of “Malaysian-Chinese” identity and later embraced as part of Malaysia’s cultural heritage — the drummers began experimenting within this context\, developing performances that evolved into drum theatre. Drum theatre finds its relation between music and man\, set in the background of the city. DESCRIPTION:Fragments of Tuah is a documentary theatre work set to original songs and music\, that revisits\, dissects and reimagines the enduring figure of Hang Tuah – the 15th-century warrior whose myth and memory continue to echo across time in modern Malaysia.  \nHaving toured as one of the opening performances for Kyoto Experiment 2025\, the one man play researched by Mark Teh\, Faiq Syazwan Kuhiri\, Syamsul Azhar and Wong Tay Sy\, looks at the different facets and phases of the legendary 15th-century figure via a layered collage of perspectives and materials-drawn from archival texts\, schoolbooks\, songs\, state slogans\, memories and history.  \nThis second staging in KL once again invites the audience into a space of reflection where the fragments of Tuah are pieced together not to restore a whole\, but to explore the gaps\, contradictions and questions that linger. Joining this staging are multimedia designer Bryan Chang\, musicians/performers OJ Law and Shariman Shuhaime\, and stage manager Shazzy Zakri. The Fragments of Tuah project was originally produced by June Tan and Hoe Hui Ting.

Hassan\, Fndrocka Notapurba\, Gejaletchumi Murugaya\, Lavinia A.\, Nuna Wan and Nur Aisyah Shahimee\, and interpreter Aw Wei Chun. \nSet at a bus stop\, the performance unfolds as different figures come and go\, each waiting for the newly promised accessible Bus 801 to arrive and allow them to continue with their day. Through a series of scenes and monologues\, the performers share moments of playful defiance\, escapism and reflection on agency\, time and belonging. \nAt its heart\, Siapa Cacat? seeks to reclaim the word “cacat”. Often used as a slur\, the production offers a powerful statement of empowerment and a provocation to reconsider who belongs on stage. It reframes disability as culture\, aesthetics and creativity\, while commenting on the stigma faced by the disabled community in Malaysia.

SUMMARY:Origin of a Tale
DESCRIPTION:Between dance and storytelling\, and all while manipulating sounds and clay\, the actor-sculptors will tell a story of the fables\, and take you on a journey through time and space. It is as if they are going back in time\, digging into the origins of the first stories\, perhaps even before words\, borders\, rules and obstacles existed.  \nAs the stories bring us together\, the actors make and create shapes: a donkey\, a turtle\, a cow\, a tree “that thought it was stronger than all”\, a frog\, an elephant\, a man in a canoe. \nAnd what if the first fable was born of clay? Artists Aurélien Zouki and Eric Deniaud knead and continue to create\, inviting us to travel with them through time and space\, on a poetic expedition into the strata of speech.
