SUMMARY:Anjung Temu Decorative Painting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Anjung Temu is a community art space specializing in decorative painting using the decoupage method—a technique where images or paper cutouts are glued onto surfaces and sealed with layers of paint or varnish to create intricate\, handcrafted designs. Through its Painting Lab and curated programmes\, it offers hands-on workshops that make decorative painting accessible\, allowing participants to explore traditional-inspired motifs\, patterns\, and techniques in a relaxed\, welcoming environment. \nJoin us on 10 May from 2PM – 5PM for a hands-on\, slow-paced workshop where you’ll paint your own beautifully crafted wooden pieces — designed to be both decorative and functional\, perfect for marking your place between the pages of your favourite books. \nRooted in the idea of mindful making\, this workshop invites you to explore colour\, texture\, and personal expression through acrylic painting. Participants can choose from a curated selection of floral patterns or take a more intuitive approach and create their own designs. Whether you follow a guide or go completely off-script\, the process is entirely your own — with gentle guidance provided throughout the session. \nEach participant will receive two wooden pieces\, offering the opportunity to experiment with different styles\, colour palettes\, or create one to keep and one to gift. To complete your pieces\, you can finish them with a ribbon for a soft\, decorative touch\, or keep things minimal — entirely up to you.

SUMMARY:Tea with Lily Yew: What is Authentic Peranakan Cuisine?
DESCRIPTION:This dialogue is part of a series of Peranakan events organised by cultural activist Lily Yew\, a Penang Nyonya grandmother and Peranakan jewellery collector. \nCollaborating with a network of Baba Nyonya personalities\, the organisers aim to set the record straight about the many misconceptions surrounding their unique culture and traditions. \nWhen it comes to Peranakan cuisine\, distorted facts and fiction have emerged and need to be addressed. The panellists will focus on the factors that constitute authenticity and whether recent food innovations enhance or diminish it. The exchange will surely be heated\, especially when opinionated Baba Nyonya personalities—particularly members of the audience—challenge the panellists and each other over recipes\, ingredients\, methods\, and taste. After all\, everyone loves Nyonya food but can’t quite agree on what is best—or worst. \nTopics will include the evolution of Peranakan cuisine and what defines it\, as well as regional similarities and differences. Specialities from Penang\, Melaka\, the East Coast\, and Jawi Peranakan traditions will be discussed\, including the various types of nasi lemak\, laksa\, nasi ulam\, and nasi kerabu found across different communities. \nThe Panellists\nNirmala Devi is a fifth-generation Melaka Chetti who grew up in the heritage enclave of Kampung Budaya Chetti Melaka. She serves as Assistant Secretary of the Melaka Chetti Heritage Association of Malaysia\, which produced The Melaka Chetti Kitchen cookbook. With over 30 years of experience in corporate communications\, she currently works for a Swiss multinational company. \nAllan Wan Lai Yuan\, born in Melaka\, is the executive chef at Madam Zee\, a Peranakan restaurant in Kuala Lumpur\, and a cultural performer. Raised in a Peranakan household\, Allan was inspired by his grandmother’s cooking and went on to pursue a culinary education. He has worked as a professional chef for many years and has appeared in the media showcasing Peranakan cuisine. \nPeter Yeoh is a sixth-generation Penangite whose Peranakan-Hokkien ancestor\, a merchant from Sumatera\, settled in Penang about 200 years ago. He is an active member of the Persatuan Peranakan Baba-Nyonya Pulau Pinang\, the Penang Heritage Trust\, and the Penang Players Theatre Group\, and is also involved in various social media communities. He serves as an administrator of Penang Walkabouts and contributes to food-focused platforms such as the US-based Hungry Onion and Malaysian Food Whisperers. \nHe has written food-related articles for publications including Penang Monthly\, The Peranakan Magazine (Singapore)\, Condé Nast Traveler (US)\, and the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong). He is the author of Simply Penang and co-author of Over Penang. \nPeter is also the Penang writer for the Michelin Guide Malaysia and has authored over 40 articles on Michelin-listed personalities and dining establishments across Asia.

SUMMARY:Seri Negara: Charting the Course of Merdeka
DESCRIPTION:Visitors are invited to explore Seri Negara — a historic heritage house where important discussions that led to Malaysia’s independence once took place. \nToday\, the building has been transformed into an immersive heritage destination by Khazanah Nasional Berhad under the larger Warisan KL initiative. Visitors can experience Malaysia’s journey to nationhood through a compelling cinematic film and interactive galleries\, alongside the Galeri Khazanah space showcasing selected works from the Khazanah art collection. \nAfter visiting\, guests can enjoy a meal or coffee at Semuka Cafe or Serai House\, where they can savour delicious local delights within the charming surroundings of this historic building. \nA perfect stop to experience Malaysian history\, art\, culture and cuisine in one place. \nThe historical narratives featured in the “Seri Negara: Charting the Course of Merdeka” exhibition at Seri Negara illuminate Carcosa’s and Seri Negara’s pivotal roles in Malaysia’s journey towards Malaysia’s independence. Tracing the site’s evolution—from its beginnings as the official residence of British colonial administrators and a guesthouse for dignitaries to its transformation into powerful witnesses of nationhood—the exhibition maps defining moments in the formation of modern Malaysia for Malaysians. \nOn the ground floor\, visitors are welcomed by the Introduction space to Seri Negara\, where a chronological timeline of Carcosa and Seri Negara and Seri Negara’s architectural features are presented through a striking installation of a tiered or deconstructed model. A model of Carcosa is showcased\, granting visitors a preview of the building that awaits restoration in the years to come. At Ruang Merdeka\, a curated selection of artworks from the Khazanah Nasional Berhad collection will also be on display\, complementing the hybrid format of the virtual exhibition “Shifting Landscapes: Mapping Space\, Time and Memory”\, and complementing Seri Negara Gallery’s theme on nation-building. \nThe journey continues upstairs\, where the first of four galleries opens with a compelling introduction to Seri Negara’s role as a silent witness to the nation’s unfolding history. Visitors are invited to experience “The Wall Speaks”\, a short cinematic film that brings this story to life through moving imagery and atmospheric storytelling. The exhibition on Seri Negara offers a multifaceted\, inclusive narrative that celebrates the will\, efforts and resistance of the people in building this country from an era before colonial intervention until the signing of the Federation of Malaya and Independence Agreements. As a tribute to Carcosa and Seri Negara’s longstanding legacies\, Seri Negara was chosen as a site to memorialise the country’s heritage and memory\, as well as the people’s aspiration to continuously shape the nation’s future.

SUMMARY:Pak Peng Arcade: Speculative Spaces & Temporality
DESCRIPTION:Pak Peng Arcade is a weekend takeover of Bangunan Pak Peng in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown\, turning a forgotten building into a space for play\, rest\, and everyday encounters. Visitors can watch performances\, join workshops\, play games\, or simply sit and observe. No schedule. No pressure. Just lepak. \n——————————————————————— \nPak Peng Arcade\nRest. Play. Ponteng. \nBangunan Pak Peng\, located along Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown\, is a mid-20th-century commercial building associated with Cheong Yoke Choy (Pak Peng)\, a prominent figure in the city’s early entertainment and property sectors. The building functioned primarily as a small retail and commercial hub\, housing modest shops and services that supported the everyday economy of Chinatown. Today\, as many units sit underused\, Bangunan Pak Peng stands as a reminder of the area’s once-vibrant commercial life and its ongoing transition within the city’s urban landscape.

SUMMARY:Pending
DESCRIPTION:Following January Low as a solo performer whose role has evolved from dancer to mother\, this work asks what it means to be a contemporary female practitioner of Indian classical dance today. It challenges both Low’s and the audience’s perceptions of the Indian classical dancer by foregrounding the unseen physical discipline required to sustain an art form without the certainty of the stage. Pending also examines how Odissi adapts in the digital age\, where learning is slowed\, guidance is virtual\, and feedback unfolds over weeks rather than moments. \nAbout the artist:\nJanuary Low is a Malaysian mid-career dance artist who specialises in Odissi and has been practising for close to 30 years. She spent her formative training in Sutra Dance Theatre and toured extensively with the company for over a decade. Her departure from Sutra in 2009 initiated a process of deep self-inquiry affecting how she chooses to share Odissi with her audience today. \nOver the years Low has been gently observing the rhythm between dance and life and how Odissi continues to exist in her daily South-East Asian female body. As a mother of three\, she continues to challenge themes of agency\, objectification and commodification of the Indian Classical Dancer.

\nOi-Jia is a solo performance that begins with the experience of becoming a mother. \nAs fear and anxiety surface in the midst of childcare\, a woman turns to examine her own mother\, and extends her gaze further to her late grandmother. The family narratives in which she has long believed begin to loosen under scrutiny and questioning – what once seemed like a clear chain of responsibility gradually dissolves\, revealing choices and temperaments that cannot be fully attributed to any single generation. \nThis is neither a letter of accusation to the previous generation nor a ritual of reconciliation. \nRather\, Oi-Jia unfolds as a suspended moment – when we can no longer hand our pain entirely to those before us\, are we still willing to take responsibility for who we are in the present? \nWith a minimalist stage and the symbolic presence of a spittoon as its central object\, the work allows the audience to witness how narrative collapses and reassembles within a single individual. This is not a display of interpersonal conflict\, but a quiet meditation on memory\, responsibility and becoming. \nCredits: \nDirector/Playwright: Wong Lay Chin \nDevised with and Performed by: MayJune
