As Initium Media turns 10\, Ning Hui\, current Publisher and CEO of Initium Media\, reflects on the newsroom’s practices and transformation in its journey of centering in-depth reporting. \nNing Hui’s role had evolved throughout the years\, from reporter\, editor\, editor-in-chief to publisher. At different stages and positions\, she has participated in the organisation’s efforts to uphold quality journalism with limited resources\, develop editorial methodologies\, and gradually build a cross-generational\, cross-contextual membership community. \nIn this talk\, several key issues and localisation strategies of Initium’s constant priority will be raised: how to conduct local reporting across different linguistic and cultural contexts within the Chinese-speaking world; how independent media can continue to provide trustworthy content when reading habits and platform logics are evolving rapidly; why Initium insists on the subscription model; and how the organisation turns readers into collaborators in the news-making process. \nThis talk is part of a series co-organised by Rumah Attap Library and Malaysia Design Archive. \nAbout the Speaker\nNing Hui is the Publisher and CEO of Initium Media. Founded in 2015\, Initium Media reports on Asia and the world through a Chinese-language lens\, providing in-depth\, trustworthy journalism with membership support at its core. Ning Hui previously served as Editor-in-Chief and currently oversees overall strategy\, membership growth\, and product direction. Her long-standing work on China’s connections with the world includes several cross-regional collaborative projects that have received multiple journalism awards.

SUMMARY:Performing Normal: Our Monster Playground
DESCRIPTION:What does society teach us about what is “acceptable” or “normal”? \nHow are we expected to “keep our monsters hidden”? And what is the cost of that? \nCan we reframe our monsters as a form of protection\, a sign for support\, or parts of us asking for care? \nIn this participatory workshop led by emerging dance artist Germaine Goh and co-facilitated by artist Alecia Neo and choreographer Zhuo Zihao\, we explore how autistic individuals are often perceived and misunderstood\, seeking to offer nuanced insights into Germaine’s lived experience of autism through play and movement. \nThrough creative movement\, illustrations and group conversations\, participants are invited to reflect on what it means to live with and empathise with difference. Using the metaphor of the monster\, participants will reflect on internalised stigma through embodied movement\, and collectively we will explore how our “monsters” are shaped by social expectations\, norms\, and pressures. \nThis workshop builds on the prior experience of a series of performances and workshops co-conceptualised by a collective of interdisciplinary artists (Alecia Neo\, Germaine Goh\, Claire Teo\, Jaspreet Sekhon Kaur\, Chong Li-chuan and Zhuo Zihao) supported by the Singapore Art Museum and ART:DIS (Art & Disability) Singapore.
