SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope VIII - Hands Percussion International Drumming Festival
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception in 2009\, Kaleidoscope has grown into a significant cultural event that celebrates the limitless energy\, diversity\, and unifying power of percussion.Inspired by the theme Infinite Beats\, this edition reflects the continuity of rhythm across time\, cultures\, and artistic journeys. Kaleidoscope VIII brings together distinguished percussion artists from Japan and Venezuela\, alongside local performers\, in a programme that highlights both mastery and exploration. While this edition looks forward\, it also builds upon a rich legacy—artists from previous Kaleidoscope editions have\, over the years\, successfully shared their performances and artistic voices with audiences in Malaysia\, shaping the festival’s evolving identity. \nMore than a concert series\, Kaleidoscope VIII is an artistic exchange. Through drums\, gongs\, cymbals\, mallets\, and movement\, performers draw from deep-rooted traditions as well as contemporary practices\, creating a dynamic soundscape that bridges heritage and innovation. Each performance contributes to a larger dialogue\, revealing how rhythm continues to adapt\, resonate\, and connect across cultures. \nFor HANDS Percussion\, Infinite Beats reaffirms its commitment to intercultural exchange\, the development of local talent\, and the ongoing effort to position Malaysia as a vital stage for international performing arts. Beyond the stage\,the festival extends into workshops\, school programmes\, community drum circles\, and artist dialogues—encounters that deepen public engagement and highlight the relevance of percussion in today’s world. \nIn Kaleidoscope VIII\, rhythm flows without limits. Each beat carries memory and momentum\, linking past encounters with new possibilities\, and reminding us of the universal pulse that connects us all.

SUMMARY:Odes To Heroes 英歌 by Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The dance drama Odes To Heroes centers around the Yingge Dance\, renowned as the “Chinese Martial Dance”. Through the fantasy time-space journey of the young man Chen Xinyuan\, it recreates the struggle history and the great sense of family and country of the ancestors in the Chaoshan hometown of overseas Chinese when they “headed to Southeast Asia”. Coupled with creative dance choreography and stunning audio-visual effects\, it perfectly combines the profundity of traditional culture with innovative stage technology. It is regarded by the audience as a cultural masterpiece that “awakens the bloodline”. It has won the funded project of the National Art Fund in 2025 and the 2025 Cross-border Communication Award at the Weibo Revitalizing Intangible Cultural Heritage Ceremony\, among others.

SUMMARY:Fork It: One Man’s Journey Through Food & Memories
DESCRIPTION:Moving from London in the early 1980’s\, when English cuisine wasn’t exactly known for being very exciting\, Gavin’s culture shock of his first Kopitiam breakfast served as a huge wake up call – his whole life had changed and he either had to figure out a way to get used to it or get left by the wayside. \nThrough the years\, growing up around resentment and anger and alcoholism\, Gavin gradually learns to understand who he is as a person and a mixed kid and ultimately a Malaysian through these different kinds of food\, and the experiences tied to them\, and how they have shaped him and his choices. \nFork It is a touching and often hilarious examination of identity\, family and belonging\, all seen through the eyes of a man who has in his own words ‘taken nearly forty years to realise the profundity’ of the impact that first Kopitiam breakfast had on him all this years ago.

SUMMARY:The Secret Drawer
DESCRIPTION:A new original Malaysian play presented by The Instant Café Theatre Company in Cantonese\, Mandarin and English with surtitles in English\, Malay & Chinese. \n“When history happens\, no-one is spared.” \nSYNOPSIS\nA man sentenced to imprisonment for his involvement in theatre and social activism starts a theatre program in prison. A man arrested and imprisoned for his involvement in social activism tells his daughter not to follow in his footsteps. Ling Tang and Tiong Wooi\, two performers\, both drawing from deeply personal yet historical family memories. \nOne\, a secret drawer belonging to a father who tells his daughter it “cannot be opened” – is a source of both fear and excitement for one child. The other\, an archive consisting of nearly 60 official documents and application letters\, ranging from a detention order from 1964 and a banishment order from 1967 to countless applications\, rejections\, and temporary entry permits spanning more than two decades – remains a matter of unconcern for the child. Until she is forced to open it. \nThese hidden things contain the ideals\, beliefs and hidden identities of their parents. Without the children knowing it they invisibly shape their family lives. \nThrough narrative\, archival material and re-enactments of plays\, poems and songs the two women explore these hidden histories\, tracing how their fathers’ backgrounds flowed into their daughters’ bodies and bloodlines\, contorting and influencing their own identities and aspirations as children – and as artists. \nThis story is both a search for “the secrets of our fathers” and a dialogue across past and present about history\, legacy and identity. \nThe story also reveals the spirit of the 1960s – the idealism of our forefathers in building a new country. But it is also above all a story about family\, about daughters and mothers and about what was lost\, what was hidden even deeper\, what was never spoken.
