DESCRIPTION:What are objects without the meaning we attach to them? Do they truly carry the memories of a place and its people? Is looking back at them through nostalgia enough\, or is there something deeper they reveal about who we are and the indigenous cultural identities we continue to shape? Join Sabahan artists Jesse Joy and Saerah R. Kunjan as they share their personal & artistic journeys with cultural objects\, exploring how these objects carry memory across generations\, inspire contemporary artistic expression\, and continue to shape our understanding of indigenous identity. \nArtist Profiles: \nJesse Joy \nJesse Joy is a self-taught Sabahan embroidery artist currently based in Kuala Lumpur. His involvement in the art scene in Sabah paved his pay to pursue his own artistic path. His embroidery works are informed by the events happening around him\, reflections of the inner self and aspects of Sabahan life. His contemporary embroidery style often includes the use of used\, pre-owned and found objects as sustainable options to art-making. Jesse’s documentary film\, Finding Bundusan\, inspired by his grandmother’s tikar Bundusan weaving was screened in events and exhibitions in various cities\, including Singapore for the Southeast Asian Arts Forum. He curated Derivatives: Beads & Lore in Kota Kinabalu Sabah\, an exhibition on Sabahan beads\, beadmaking and accessories\, marking his first foray into curating. In 2022\, he started Bundusan Books\, a bookshop specialising in Bornean themed publications\, bringing Borneo within everyone’s reach. \nSaerah R. Kunjan \nSaerah R. Kunjan is a neo-Indigenous style artist and ethical wear creator of Sabahan and Sarawakian heritage\, now based in Kuala Lumpur. Drawing inspiration from Borneo’s rich cultural heritage\, her practice blends Indigenous traditions with a contemporary visual language rooted in identity\, place\, and storytelling. Working across fashion\, styling\, and design\, Saerah reinterprets Indigenous aesthetics in ways that are both modern and meaningful. She has styled and designed looks for local artists\, emerging talents\, and household names across Sabah\, Sarawak\, and Peninsular Malaysia. As a slow fashion advocate\, she prioritises ethical creation and frequently collaborates with Indigenous artisans to craft one-of-a-kind pieces. Through her work\, Saerah celebrates Borneo’s diverse cultural legacy while exploring how ancestral knowledge can continue to inspire contemporary expression\, ensuring these stories remain relevant for present and future generations.

Join Sabahan artists Hannah Bhatt and Fay Ulrica as they unpack the tensions between tradition and modern life\, carrying ancestral memory into contemporary spaces\, and what it means to belong to a place while constantly changing within it. \nArtist Profiles: \nHannah Bhatt \nHannah Bhatt is a Malaysian ceramic artist and founder of Uncanny Valley Studios\, known for her surreal\, tactile sculptures that explore memory\, identity\, and transformation. A former lawyer turned artist\, Hannah \nweaves personal narratives often shaped by motherhood\, loss\, and resilience into work that invites intimate connection. Her practice merges the whimsical and uncanny\, blending storytelling\, sculpture\, and community engagement. Hannah’s pieces have been exhibited in solo and group shows\, and she often collaborates across disciplines\, from fashion to social impact projects. Through Uncanny Valley Studios\, she creates spaces both physical and emotional for people to reflect\, play\, and find beauty in the in-between. \nFay Ulrica \nFay Ulrica is a Malaysian visual artist\, video producer\, and creative technologist whose work blurs the line between beauty and discomfort. Emerging from a foundational background in illustration \nand moving images\, her body of work represents a long-term evolution of narrative craft—a continuous confrontation with identity\, memory\, and emotional exposure. Fay grounds her studio grit in structural execution as the Managing Partner of Undercurrent\, a collective building resilient Cultural \nInfrastructure within Malaysia’s creative economy\, and as the founder of Far Out Solutions\, an AI-driven tech studio focused on building intelligent solutions. She approaches technology not as an optimisation tool\, but as an extension of craft\, empathy\, and real world use.

Join world-renowned Sape Artist Alena Murang & award winning bornean film director Sarah Lois Dorai for a special screening of their short documentary Songs of the Highlands\, followed by a sharing session discussing their work in efforts to keep their shared Kelabit heritage alive for future generations. \nAlena Murang \nAlena Murang is an internationally acclaimed sape’ musician\, vocalist\, visual artist and storyteller from Sarawak\, celebrated for bringing the rich cultural heritage of the Kelabit and Kenyah communities to audiences around the world. The first woman to professionally perform on the traditional sape’\, she sings in the endangered Kenyah and Kelabit languages\, weaving ancestral stories into contemporary music\, visual art and film. Guided by the belief that culture should be lived rather than simply preserved\, Alena’s work bridges tradition and modernity\, carrying the voices\, rhythms and spirit of Borneo to stages and galleries across more than 20 countries. \nSarah Lois Dorai \nSarah Lois Dorai is an award winning Kelabit film director\, publisher & creative from Malaysia whose work is shaped by community-led collaboration with indigenous communities and cultural practitioners. Her films largely explore the intersection of womanhood and cultural continuity and she passionately advocates for indigenous authorship\, self-agency and representation both in and outside the film industry. Sarah was honoured as one of Southeast Asia’s Top 5 Women in Media (2024) and named among WikiImpact’s 100 Malaysian Changemakers for her contributions to Arts & Culture (2025).

She draws inspiration from her Iban-Chinese heritage and the rich cultural landscapes in which she was raised\, with textiles frequently serving as her primary medium. Her creative portfolio spans multiple disciplines\, including curating wardrobes for film\, voice acting\, and producing her inaugural art installation in conjunction with the first-ever Rajang River Music Festival in 2025. These projects reflect her commitment to celebrating local culture while blending traditional elements with contemporary design. Through her work\, Allie continues to explore the intersections of heritage\, innovation\, and self-expression\, using fashion and art as platforms to showcase culture\, engage communities\, and inspire the next generation of creatives in Malaysia and beyond. \nBethany Luhong Balan: \nGraphic Designer\, Visual Artist & Poet (Sarawak)Bethany is a freelance multimedia designer\, poet\, and self-taught visual artist based in Kuching\, Sarawak. She holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and has been involved in creative pursuits in various forms for as long as she can remember. Her journey towards becoming a full-fledged artist began in 2016\, when she started performing spoken word poetry with the Wordsmiths of Kuching. Since then\, she has taken part in numerous performances\, poetry anthologies\, art exhibitions\, and even a virtual artist residency. She draws inspiration from the duality of human nature and the many contradictions that shape individual identity. As a multidisciplinary artist\, her work seeks to blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy. DESCRIPTION:*OPENING RECEPTION 4PM ONWARDS\, 7 AUG 2026* \nA collection of works from Bornean artists reimagining the indigenous Bornean identity not as a relic of the past but as a living\, evolving expression shaping our collective future. \nBornean Indigenous identities are often defined by the lives and traditions of our ancestors. They explored and created with the materials they had at hand from their natural environment\, and later adapted them through migration\, emerging trade\, and agricultural practices. These skills\, creations\, and artistic expressions were then passed down through generations as “tradition.” Somewhere between time and space\, we forgot that what we consider “old” or “traditional” was once new and contemporary. \nToday we return to the path of their footsteps. Drawing from the materials of our current environment and the lived experiences of our generation\, this exhibition brings together a collection of works from Bornean artists who explore contemporary expressions derived from ancestral knowledge as a mark of 21st-century Indigenous cultural identity\, reframing the Indigenous Bornean identity not as a relic of the past but as a living and evolving expression that will shape the collective futures of generations to come.
